Kate Lally, a 5-foot-9 left-handed setter from State College, Pennsylvania, became the fourth member of Penn State women’s volleyball’s 2023 recruiting class after announcing her verbal commitment to the Nittany Lions on Instagram Tuesday night.

Lally is wrapping up her senior year at nearby State College Area High School, where she was a standout member of the girls’ volleyball team. Lally earned first-team all-Mid-Penn Commonwealth recognition as a senior. She also plays lacrosse for the Little Lions.
Lally represents Fusion Volleyball Club, based out of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, on the club circuit. She joins pin hitter Karis Willow, defensive specialist Jocelyn Nathan, and middle blocker Catherine Burke in Penn State’s incoming freshman class. Lally’s father received his doctorate degree from Penn State.
Lally, who has dual citizenship between the U.S. and Canada, originally committed to the University of Toronto before deciding to join the Nittany Lions instead. She visited Penn State’s campus and toured the facilities with the coaching staff last week.
Lally will be the third player from Pennsylvania on the program’s 2023 roster, joining senior pin hitter Macy Van Den Elzen and fifth-year senior defensive specialist Lina Perugini, a graduate transfer from Coastal Carolina. Van Den Elzen hails from Macungie, while Perugini is from Bethlehem.
Lally will be the first State High product to play for the Penn State women’s volleyball team since Taylor Leath used her final season of eligibility with the Nittany Lions in 2018 after graduate transferring from North Carolina. Lally’s positional versatility resembles that of junior Quinn Menger, another setter/defensive specialist who gives Penn State’s coaching staff some flexibility.
Lally will arrive on campus this summer with the rest of Penn State’s freshman class. Her addition to the program continued a strong offseason for Katie Schumacher-Cawley in terms of adding talent to the roster for 2023. The Nittany Lions also landed five players from the transfer portal in Perugini, Mac Podraza, Jess Mruzik, Camryn Hannah, and Ally Van Eekeren.
Penn State is coming off a 26-8 season and appearance in the Sweet 16 in Schumacher-Cawley’s debut campaign as head coach of the Nittany Lions. The program is generating plenty of national buzz this winter after securing one of the top transfer classes in college volleyball. Excitement for the fall is certainly building among Penn State’s fan base.
