Penn State Classic Adds Classic Foe
Volleyblog Seattle is reporting that the Univerisity of Washington will face off against Penn State in Rec Hall on either September 14th or September 15th. This signals changes to the Penn State Classic Volleyball Tournament, tentatively scheduled for that weekend with Lehigh, Eastern Illinois and Duquense. We believe Lehigh has pulled out. Stay tuned for the match schedule for that weekend.
The last time Penn State played the Huskies, on December 9, 2006 in Washington’s Hec Ed Pavilion, the match ended (as reported by Volleyblog Seattle) with Courtney Thompson, the Huskies All-American setter, leading a line of her teammates “through the arena, high-fiving fans from courtside all the way to the cheap seats” after #3-ranked Washington downed #5-ranked Penn State 3-1 (27-30, 24-30, 30-28, 26-30) to move on to the Final Four.
Penn State’s Head Coach Russ Rose had this to say after the match:
I would like to congratulate Washington on a great match and on hosting a great Regional. I was disappointed in the match and how we did some things but I’m not disappointed in the players as people. The players played hard and did what they thought they needed to do to win. You have to give credit to Washington and the crowd [of 6,549] is obviously a very valuable thing to have in a Regional Final match.
Washington presents a top-notch early-season challenge for the Nittany Lions, and certainly has the talent to give Penn State all they can handle (hopefully, not more). We’re not enthusiastic about line-dances in the stands to celebrate victories (though young players get alot of leeway from us after winning big matches), but we do hope that Penn State fans will fill Rec Hall for this one to cheer on the Nittany Lions. It should be quite a match.
The video below shows the kind of turnout and enthusiasm this match deserves:
Will Rec Hall fans give Penn State a home court advantage against Washington?
