Stat Joust: Illinois, Northwestern, Penn State

This weekend, Penn State makes the white tailed deer trip (be honest, how many of you knew that the white tailed deer is the state animal of Illinois?), taking on the University of Illinois on Friday night in Champaign, and Northwestern University on Saturday night in Evanston.  We’ll have write-ups of both teams on Friday and Saturday.

For now, we’ve taken a look at how the three teams rank in team and individual stats (Big Ten matches only) — what we call a Stat Joust.

Team Stats – Big Ten Only

What is striking from the team statistics, is how close the three teams are in several of the statistical categories.  There’s a fairly big disparity in team hitting percentage, but the three teams are wedged right together at #3, #4, And #5 in opponent’s hitting percentage, as they are in blocking (#2, #3, and #4) and service aces (#1, #2, and #3).  Defense, anyone?

Individual Stats – Big Ten Only

The statistics speak for themselves, though we’d like to point out the obvious: Micha Hancock, Katie Dutchman, Anna Dorn, and Nia Grant are very talented freshmen.
