Penn State Volleyball Commit Alexa Markley Named MaxPreps All-American

Penn State women’s volleyball commit Alexa Markley was named a 2020 MaxPreps All-American this week.

Markley earned a spot on the second team and is among 46 prospects from around the country who have been recognized so far by the outlet as All-Americans.

MaxPreps will honor more players at a later date after many states postponed their high school volleyball seasons to the spring, including 2021 Penn State signees Anjelina Starck (Colorado) and Rachel Muisenga (Illinois), who inked letters of intent with the program in November.

Markley, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter from Peachtree City, Georgia, became the first player to commit to the Nittany Lions’ 2022 recruiting class on September 4, 2020 at the beginning of her junior season for McIntosh High School. Markley and the Chiefs went on to win the Georgia 5A state championship for the fourth year in a row after posting a 35-1 record last fall.

Markley racked up 405 kills as a junior and was named an all-state selection by the Georgia coaches’ association. Two of Markley’s McIntosh teammates, Duke-bound middle blocker Ngozi Iloh and Georgia State-bound setter Claire Lewis, joined her as MaxPreps All-Americans.

Markley is in the midst of her club season for A5 Mizuno Volleyball, which consistently produces plenty of Division I players and is among the nation’s most respected clubs.

Markley, who is Penn State’s lone commit in the 2022 recruiting class as of the publication of this article, may be part of a rather small talent haul for head coach Russ Rose next cycle given the NCAA’s eligibility pause for the 2020-21 athletic year.

Markley’s excellent vertical leap and powerful swing are evident as soon as one turns on her highlight reel. It will be exciting to see how Markley improves heading into her senior year at McIntosh next fall before she eventually enrolls at Penn State ahead of the 2022 season.
