Russ Rose in 1983: “Middle blocker with a good blend of competitive experience and physical potential. Led the team in blocking in 1982.”
Russ Rose Now (2026): “Marcy was from Conneaut Lake High School — the same high school as Joanne Elwell. She was skilled, bright and competitive. She played middle for us and should have been an All-American during her career at Penn State. Marcy was always ready to play and she led the Atlantic 10 conference in blocks per set in 1983. Back then we would do drills where the baskets would be down, and they would have to do a spike approach, touch the rim, go to the net, block three times, come under the net, do floor skills and then do the exact same thing on the other side and touch the other rim. Marcy, Meredith Aronson, and Lori Barberich were the only three players that could touch the rim. So when those guys were getting tired, all the other people were out of luck, because they had to keep doing it with no hope. They might be able to touch the backboard, but I only counted the rim touches. Today, if a team has 18 players, they might have 15 players who can all touch the rim. That’s how much the physical nature of the game has changed. Marcy and Lori played middle during the four years they were here together, and we had great success during their era. She was an engineering student and is still working in the field.”
