Tomorrow’s Quote of the Day Today

“I want them to have success because I care for them, but I don’t want them to have success against us.”  Penn State head coach Russ Rose, in an interview with Patrick Kowalski, Daily Collegian Staff Writer, on the return to Rec Hall on Saturday evening of former Penn State assistant coach Steve Aird (now Maryland’s head coach) and Penn State’s former director of volleyball operations, Adam Hughes (now an assistant coach at Maryland).

You can admit it. You’re not particularly interested in tonight’s women’s volleyball match between AVCA #6 Penn State (22-3, 10-2 in the B1G ) and Rutgers (7-18, 0-12 in the B1G) because you look at Rutgers and say to yourself “hey, they’re 0-12 in the B1G. This match is over before it begins.”

It may be, but we’re pretty sure Russ Rose isn’t counting any chickens just yet.  And we would think the players aren’t either — they’re likely to be focused on continuing to build momentum following their back-to-back impressive performances against Ohio State.  As Joe Paterno used to say: you’re either getting better or you’re getting  worse.  You don’t get better by taking teams for granted.

So who are these Scarlet Knights?  They lost both matches last weekend — 3-0 to Nebraska and 3-1 to Iowa. Despite being swept by the Huskers, Rutgers played pretty well, putting up season’s best numbers for kills (37), assists (35) and digs (47).  And they showed perseverance against Iowa, winning the third set by a score of 27-25. Among the statistical leaders for Rutgers last weekend were 6-3 So. MB Lauren Cloyd, with a team-high 21 kills for the two matches (3.0 kills/set), and 5-5 Jr. libero Ali Schroeter, who led the team with a total of 40 digs for the weekend, and currently is ranked #5 in  with 4.39 digs per set.

So come out to see the Nittany Lions at Rec Hall.  They are a very good team, getting better, and should be in the thick of things, again, come NCAA Tournament time.  Below are their stats for the season to date:
