Russ Rose in 1983: “A determined backrow specialist with an excellent serve.”
Russ Rose Now (2026): “Carla was a backrow player from California who was incredibly bright. She was interested in computers at a time when computers were just being introduced and still used punch cards. She helped so many players with their various projects. She and Pam Schaefer were the two major mischievous players at that point in time. One story I remember was the players had to run from Rec Hall to the IM building, which was a two-mile run. Everyone had finished, and we’re waiting for Carla, and we’re waiting, and finally she walks up with an ice cream cone. She had run as far as she wanted, then she had stopped and somehow got an ice cream cone. We asked her if she had taken money with her on the run, because this was before you could use credit cards. And she said no, she just asked somebody if they would buy her an ice cream, and they did. Carla was a true wild card. She used to be roaming campus on roller skates and played hard and certainly competed hard. She also went on to an incredibly successful career.”
