Penn State vs. Florida; Cal Bears Sweep Baylor Bears in Opener

In less than an hour, the Penn State Women’s Volleyball team (34-0) will take on the Florida Gators (25-5) (6:pm ET at the Stephen C. O’Connell center, pictured above). To watch the match free, on streaming video, Click Here. You can follow the scoring on Game Tracker

Some observers think the Nittany Lions may falter playing on the Gators home court and in front of a hostile crowd (Florida went 10-2 at home during the regular season, with an overall RPI of 16 out of 330; Penn State’s RPI ranked 2nd), but Russ Rose doesn’t necessarily see it that way. “I think our best matches this year were a couple of matches that we played on the road,” Rose said in an interview with Bill Landis in today’s Daily Collegian. “That’s not to say that will happen Friday, but I’m not concerned that this group can’t handle playing on the road.”

As Landis notes (as have many others) a more tangible concern for Penn State probably will be Kelly Murphy, Florida’s setter, a top rated recruit in high school and the 2007 Gatorade National Player of the Year.

Because the California Golden Bears swept the Baylor Bears (26-24, 25-20, 25-17) in today’s afternoon match (click here for the Game Tracker results from that match), whomever wins tonight’s match will play Cal.
