Russ Rose Now (2025): “Joanie was a really talented student athlete.  She only played for us for two seasons, but she had great skills and was incredibly competitive.  She made the team better by how she competed on the other side of the net.  Great girl.  Great family.”

Before Penn State: Four-year letterwinner in both volleyball and basketball at Allentown Central Catholic High School in Allentown, Pa.; team captain in volleyball senior year for the Vikettes; led the squad to the 2002-2005 league and district titles; squad claimed the Pennsylvania 3A state title in 2001; team was state 2A runners-up in both 2002 and 2003; also a two-year starter and captain on the basketball team, winning four league championships, four district championships, and three Pennsylvania state titles; 2004 Lehigh Valley Conference Scholar Athlete for Volleyball; 2005 Basketball Scholar Athlete nominee for Central Catholic in 2005; Female Scholar Athlete of the Year for Allentown Central Catholic in 2005; US Army Female Scholar Athlete in 2005.
