USA Takes Down Turkey – 3-0 (Quarterfinals on Tuesday)

Morning Report

The United States closed out its Group B Preliminary round with a 3-0 win over Turkey, and will now move on to a Quarterfinals match against the Dominican Republic (2-3 in Prelims) on Tuesday.   We’ll have more on that match later today or early Tuesday morning.

Day 9 Review: Women’s quarter-final ties confirmed (www.london2012)

Two sides finished with five wins from five – Russia in Group A and the United States in Group B.  Russia won the race to finish top of the pile, coming out on top 3-2 in a straight shoot-out with Italy this afternoon.  The world champions and their Italian rivals were neck and neck heading in to the clash and Russia twice came from behind to get over the line.  The USA, meanwhile, eased to a 3-0 win over Turkey to sign off their group stage campaign.

 UPDATE 2 – Olympics-Volleyball-US women top pool stage undefeated (Reuters)

By Paul Casciato.  LONDON Aug 5 (Reuters) – The U.S. women’s volleyball team cruised to victory in three straight sets against Turkey on Sunday, closing out the preliminary round of the London Olympics tournament undefeated at the top of Pool B.  Turkey sails out of the competition alongside Britain, Algeria and Serbia after China and Korea went to five sets earlier in the day, giving them both enough points to earn a spot in the knockout round of the quarter-finals.  Turkey played a blinding first set before losing 27-25, and forcing the United States to shore up their defence and raise their game.

Sweep of Algeria puts Dominicans in quarters (www.nbcolympics)

The Dominican Republic became the latest team to clinch a berth in the women’s volleyball quarterfinals Sunday with a sweep of Algeria at Earls Court in London.  The set scores were 25-15, 25-16, 25-13.  The victory sealed the No. 4 seed in Group A for the Dominicans, as they will finish with six points behind Russia, Italy and Japan. They will face the U.S., the No. 1 seed in Group B, on Tuesday.
