No. 4 Penn State women’s volleyball swept Rutgers 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-17) Saturday night in New Brunswick, beating the Scarlet Knights for the second consecutive match.
Nia Reed led the Nittany Lions with a match-high 11 kills in the victory, while Jonni Parker and Taylor Leath finished close behind with 10 kills apiece. All three hit well over .400 at College Avenue Gym.
Freshman middle blockers Serena Gray and Kaitlyn Hord added six kills each and combined for four blocks. Classmate Allyson Cathey rounded out the scoring with three kills of her own.
Penn State put together one of its most complete performances offensively, hitting .379 as a team to extend its winning streak to eight straight matches in Big Ten play. Kendall White led the defense with a match-high 10 digs and two assists.
Bryanna Weiskircher tallied a match-high 40 assists, three digs, a block, and a service ace, keeping Penn State’s offense in rhythm all night long. Freshman defensive specialist Jenna Hampton led the team with two aces and three digs off the bench.
Through the first 20 matches of the season, Leath is barely edging out Parker for the team lead in kills with 176 — two more than the freshman from Casstown, Ohio. Leath continued her outstanding passing with seven digs Saturday night.
The Nittany Lions (17-3) return to Rec Hall Friday when they host Indiana at 7:30 p.m. Head coach Steve Aird and the Hoosiers are 13-7 following a sweep of Ohio State.
