Nittany Lions close the B1G season with a win over Iowa 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20)

The Nittany Lions finish the B1G season with a good win over the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Lions were led with Kennedy Martin (26k, 4 aces, 7 blocks), Emmi Sellman (13k, 3 blocks) and Maggie Mendelson (8 kills, 8 blocks). This closes out Penn State’s B1G campaign at 18-12 overall, 12-8 in the B1G.

Penn State has had a season that required a lot of bouncing back and today was no different. The Nittany Lions showed a clean overall performance only dishing out 13 total errors in 4 sets. Kennedy Martin, the B1G’s official kills/set leader this season, led the team with 33.5 points (26 kills, 0.429 hitting percentage, 4 aces, 7 digs, 7 blocks). She is currently now at 595 kills, the most of any Penn State player in the rally-scoring era, and will aim to cross the 600-kill mark only achieved by a few players such as Jordan Thompson and Dani Drews. Emmi Sellman (13 kills, 0.343 hitting percentage, 3 blocks and 6 digs) and Maggie Mendelson (8 kills, 8 blocks) contributed 15 and 12 points respectively. Iowa had more kills than Penn State but was offset by strong serving and blocking. Today’s 15 block performance was the highest this season. The Lions struggled with the Iowa offense allowing them to hit 0.252 in the loss. Gillian Grimes led team with 19 digs and Maggie Mendelson led the team with 8 blocks. Addie Lyon set a good offensive match with 51 assists and a team hitting efficiency of 0.418 in the match.

Penn State will now wait for Selection Sunday to know where they will play for the 1st and 2nd round of the NCAA tournament.
