The USA’s 4th place finish in the 2009 Pan America Cup was a disappointment to many of its fans, particularly after the Americans 3-1 victory over Puerto Rico left them in first place in Pool A with a 5-0 record. That high point was followed by a loss to Gold Medal winning Brazil and a 3-1 loss in a rematch with Puerto Rico, which captured the bronze.
Brazil dominated the final team statistics, with its Spikers ranked 1st (USA – 5th), Blockers 1st (USA – 3rd), Servers 7th (Puerto Rico – 1st, USA – 3rd), Digging 1st (USA -3rd) Setters 1st (USA – 5th), and Receivers 3rd (USA -4th). In individual statistics, the USA’s Nancy Metcalf led the USA in scoring with 93 points, (ranking 6th overall), followed by Jordan Larson with 77 points (15th overall), Kristin Richards with 66 points (21st overall), team Captain Danielle Scott-Arruda with 59 points (27th overall), and former Penn State All-American Christa Harmotto with 48 points (35th overall). Scott-Arruda led the tournament in blocking with .92 per set, with Harmotto’s .58 per set ranking 4th overall.
