Alexis Ewing became the fourth member of Penn State women’s volleyball’s 2025 recruiting class when she verbally committed to the Nittany Lions Saturday night, announcing the news on her Instagram account.
The 6-foot-4 outside hitter from the Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland, is the daughter of NBA Hall of Fame inductee Patrick Ewing and former Long Beach State volleyball star Cheryl Weaver, who’s the head coach of Alexis’ high school team. Ewing joined outside hitter Marin Collins, libero Lexi Gin, and middle blocker Gabby Nichols in Penn State’s 2025 class. Collins was the first to pick the Nittany Lions on June 18, 2023.
Ewing and her family visited Penn State’s campus the weekend of August 18-19 and attended the team’s preseason scrimmage against St. John’s at Rec Hall, observing the action after chatting with Penn State’s coaches and players. Ewing also toured campus and took photos in her future Penn State uniforms while she was in town.
Ewing’s commitment to the Nittany Lions continues a strong start to the program’s 2025 recruiting haul. And there appears to be room to add more, given the number of upperclassmen scheduled to extinguish their eligibility following the 2024 season. Stay tuned.
Ewing and the Bulldogs are currently 4-2 early in her junior season at the Bullis School. She plays her club volleyball for the VA Juniors and is considered one of the top outside hitter prospects in the 2025 class. Ewing has participated in USA volleyball’s NTDP events.
It will be exciting to see how Ewing continues to develop the rest of her junior season and into her senior year next fall before arriving on campus at Penn State prior to the 2025 season.
Ewing’s athletic pedigree and high upside as a prospect make her an impressive addition for Katie Schumacher-Cawley’s staff, which welcomed Penn State great Megan Hodge Easy as an assistant coach prior to this season. The chance to learn from Hodge Easy and the rest of Penn State’s coaches was likely a significant factor in Ewing’s decision to commit to the Nittany Lions.
