A comparison of the team and individual statistics for Penn State’s 2009 and 2008 Women’s Volleyball teams is off point for so many reasons (different opponents, for one thing). But we were curious, so we did one anyway, for attack and blocking statistics. Nothing earthshaking, but some highlights (Warning: not valid or of interest in various states of mind and other jurisdictions):

Comparison: 2009 (through 10-12-09) and 2008: Attack

Arielle Wilson’s .576 ’09 hitting percentage leads everyone (Christa Harmotto’s ’08 .486 is second, followed by Arielle Wilson’s ’08 .458); Megan Hodge’s hitting percentage is way up (.444 in ’09 vs. .349 in ’08), as are her kills/set (4.76 vs. 4.09); as one would expect given the different schedules, the ’09 team hitting percentage is higher than the ’08 team percentage (.421 vs. .390) , although opponents’ hitting percentages are quite similar (.084 in ’09 vs. .089 in ’08).

Comparison: 2009 (through 10-12-09) and 2008: Blocking

The ’08 team, with Christa Harmotto, had better statistics than the ’09 team (3.22 blocks/set for the ’08 team vs. 2.97 blocks/set for the ’09 team); but Christa Harmotto’s 1.47 blocks/set in ’08 just edges out Arielle Wilson’s 1.46 blocks/set in ’09, and Arielle Wilson’s 1.37 blocks/set in ’08 is only slightly better than Fatima Balza’s 1.35 blocks/set in ’09. Alisha Glass had better stats in ’08 (.98 blocks/set vs. .79 blocks/set in ’09).
